artists-ideas

Gary Bryan

For my object unit I was researching several artists that I thought had a good strategy of emphasizing their main subject. The photographer Gary Bryan was one of my favourites. Gary Bryan specialises a lot with depth of field. He focuses on the range of distance that appears acceptably sharp. The depth of field varies depending on the camera type, aperture and focusing distance, although print size and viewing distance can also influence our perception of depth of field. You notice the depth of filed he uses in his imagery does not abruptly change from sharp to unsharp, but instead occurs as a gradual transition. Everything immediately in front of or in back of the focusing distance begins to lose sharpness. When looking at his photos you can see everything is sharp, so the photographer has obviously used a small aperture, in order to maximize the depth-of-field. I think Bryan has also considered using a relatively wide focal length maybe a 28mm lens, as this gives the illusion that the  background seems to be far in the distance.
